Titanic 100 Cobh 2012

Titanic 100 Cobh 2012, a centenary year commemorating the Titanic

Cobh, Co. Cork is set to host a year of memorial events in honor of this historic vessel. Cobh, then Queenstown was the Titanic's last port of call and with the anniversary upon us plans are well under way to hold a wide range of events for all the family.

Cobh to this day still preserves the original buildings, streets and piers which existed 100 years ago. It also keeps the memory alive through the informative Titanic walking tour www.titanic-trail.com, the Cobh museum www.cobhmuseum.com, it's interactive Titanic Experience www.titanicexperiencecobh.ie, and it's heritage centre, The Queenstown Story www.cobhheritage.com. All of these, along with a fantastic line up of events provide the perfect framework to commemorate this tragic liner.

The events planned include, concerts on Spike Island, The Titanic Centenary week and the Cobh Vintage Fair to name but a few. A full list of events can be found at; http://www.titanic100.ie/index.php?option=com_content&id=52&Itemid=56.

These events are guaranteed to have something for everyone and as the warmer months approach we are sure to see many visitors traveling from far and wide to catch a glimpse of the Titanic's last port and relive the tragic stories of the passengers aboard.

As I was working in the area this summer I was very lucky to visit Cobh on more than one occasion. I was also fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to go onboard 15 different cruise liners which was fantastic!! The liners that come into Cobh are huge and can have over 4,000 people on board. These liners have everything, shops, swimming pool, cooking classes, libraries, numerous restaurants etc etc! The staff are extremely helpful and are there to ensure your every need is met. I found the liners to be fantastic, once you had made it aboard (the security is EXTREMELY high!!), the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly although this does vary from liner to liner (and depending on which nationalities are onboard). My favourite liner would have to be the Queen Mary 2. The Queen Mary 2 is one of the Cunard liners and has 14 decks. It is total and utter luxury. Every detail is immaculate, the staff were fantastic and the food was absolutely to die for! I certainly wouldn't mind spending a few weeks on board this liner (below) . . . .great way to avoid final year!!

Which ever way you look at it though Cobh is THE place to be this year, there is going to be something for everyone and with the recession hitting hard holidaying in Ireland is becoming more popular! So spread the word . . Titanic 100 Cobh 2012!

Dublin Zoo Set New Record!

Dublin Zoo Set New Record!

During 2011, 1 million people passed through the gates of Dublin Zoo!!

This is a new record for Dublin Zoo and beats the previous record of 963,053 people set in 2010. Dublin Zoo is one of Ireland best known tourist attractions and has been open for 180 years.

The Barrett family from the Navan Road in Dublin were the 1 millionth visitors to Dublin Zoo. To celebrate, they were given a five-year family pass and a VIP tour of the Zoo where they met the keepers and got exclusive behind the scenes access.

Leo Oosterweghel, director of Dublin Zoo said, We are absolutely thrilled with reaching 1 million visitors and we would like to thank all our friends and supporters, old and new, who helped us achieve this incredible milestone. I am delighted to be able to say for the second year in a row that the Zoo is more popular than ever before."

I was delighted to read this good news story, especially considering the amount of negative news stories we have seen of late. This story gives a great boost to all attractions in Ireland, most especially to similar attractions such as Fota Wildlife Park in Cork. Unfortunately I have not visited Dublin Zoo since I was a tiny tot but have visited Fota on a number of occasions and have really really enjoyed it, despite probably being a bit too old! The Zoo is fantastic place to visit for people of all ages and with this amount of people taking a trip I must be right!
